About Thea Sawyer

Thea Sawyer is a Certified Balance Instructor (1992), a certified Aplomb Instructor (1997), and a California-certified yoga teacher (2002). Born and raised in The Netherlands, she has lived in New York, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Paris, and San Jose, California. Her empirical studies of healthy posture have taken her to Mexico, Argentina, India, Portugal, France, and The Netherlands.

Before discovering Balance, she lived with chronic back pain, scoliosis, and lumbar disk damage that limited her activities and sapped her energy. Especially debilitating symptoms during her years as a computer programmer led her to begin studying Balance in 1991. In 1996 she moved to Paris to study with Nöelle Perez-Christiaens at the Aplomb Institute. She also completed an anthropology research project at the University of Paris and received a diploma from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1997). Thea has studied therapeutic yoga at the Mandiram (therapeutic yoga center) of TKV Desikachar in Chennai, India and with Kate Holcombe in San Francisco.

Today her back pains are gone, she feels more fit than ever, and the healing powers of Aplomb and Balance have made her a passionate practitioner of these techniques. She loves to share her knowledge of pain-free posture and how to maintain energy and ease of movement at any age.
